Roadmap

- In this course we will focus on how to create and maintain a Python project's testing suite with pytest. As we progress we will cover how to use this testing framework as you develop code in a test-driven development format, also known as TDD. While there are several types of tests such as unit, integration, linting, smoke, and functional tests, we will focus on unit tests that cover the behavior we would like our source code methods to carry out. We'll be covering the basics of the pytest framework's core features, such as assertions, exceptions, fixtures, and parametrization. After that, we'll cover how to modularize common test utility functions with conftest.py. A file that is automatically available to all our tests in our test directory. For the final section, I'll give you an existing pytest project and walk you through how to determine its functionality by looking at the test first. While doing this, we will use TDD to add in new functionality. For this course I will be using a Docker container to run the project, and we'll be using Visual Studio as my interactive development environment, or IDE. For those of you who haven't used Docker, here's a quick rundown. Docker is a platform that allows you to create a container, a predefined environment that we can customize with certain installations. A container's installed packages allow us to run our app, and the container itself runs on the installed Docker engine, which runs on your computer's operating system. Feel free to skip around the videos as needed. If you're new to pytest though, feel free to stick with me from start to finish.
