From the course: Microsoft Project Tips Weekly

Sort resources by type and name

- [Narrator] I'm Bonnie Beifore. This week, we'll see how to sort the resource list so resources show up grouped by type, and then in alphabetical order. Let's head to the resource sheet for this project. On the view tab, click resource sheet. And you can see that the resources aren't in any particular order. We have work and material and cost resources all thrown together. To make it easier to select the resources you want, it's helpful to have them grouped by their type so that you have all the work resources together, followed by material, and then cost. Then of course, you want them in alphabetical order. To do that, on the view tab click the sort button. On the drop down menu, choose sort by, and that opens up the sort dialogue box. The first thing we're going to sort by is the resource type. In the sort by drop down list, we're going to choose type. In addition, because I want the work resources to show up at the top of the list, I'm going to select the descending option. That way the type will be in the order of work, material, and then cost. In the then by box we're going to sort by name. I type in the name of the field and then select it. And we'll keep that in ascending order. In addition, down at the bottom of the dialogue box, there's a checkbox permanently renumber the resources. Because I want the resource ID's to stay in sequential order, I'm going to keep that checkbox turned on. Go ahead and click sort. Now you can see we have all of our work resources together, in alphabetical order, followed by the material resources in alphabetical order, and finally the cost resources. If for some reason you want to sort the resources in a temporary sort, when you click the sort button and choose sort by, be sure to turn off the check box permanently renumber resources. And that's how you sort your resource list by resource type, and then name.
