Create and save a project

- [Instructor] Microsoft Project offers a few ways to create new projects from scratch. When you do it's a good idea to fill in some basic info. And it's never too soon to build the habit, save early, save often. In the Backstage view you can click New on the left side of the screen to get to the new page. To create a new blank project click the first icon which is called Blank Project. And that creates a new empty file. And it will be called something like Project One or Project Two. Another way to create a new blank file is with a keyboard shortcut. If you press Control N that automatically creates a new blank project file for you. In this case the file is Project Two. Each new project that you create in a session gets a higher number. And when you have a project the next step is to add a little bit of information about it. To do that we're gonna go to the Project tab and then click Project Information. That opens up the Project Information dialog box. Now the first thing you probably wanna set is the start date for the project. This is going to be the date the tasks will start. If you don't assign them a specific start date and they don't have predecessors. So for example I can say I want it to start on January 7th, 2019. In the Schedule From box it's set to Project Start Date. And that means that all of your tasks begin as soon as possible. Then as you build your schedule you'll be able to see the estimated finish date. The Calendar box is set to Standard. That's a built-in calendar that comes with Project. And it's initially set so that the working times are Monday through Friday eight a.m. to five p.m. with an hour for lunch. Well let's say that's all the information we're gonna set at this point. So I'm gonna go ahead and click OK to close that dialog box. If you want to be reminded to fill in that information go to the File tab and then on the left side click Options. In the Project Options dialog box click the Advanced category. In the very first section with the heading General turn on the check box for prompt for project info for new projects. Then click OK. Now I'll press Control N again to create yet another new project. This time the project information dialog box opens automatically. Well in this case I'm gonna click Cancel to close the dialog box. And I also wanna close this Project Three file. So I'm gonna head up to the top right and I'm gonna click this lower X which is for this particular project. When I click that it closes that project. Now let's say we wanna save our project file, Project Two. I'm gonna go to the File tab and I'm gonna click Save. But because I've never saved this project before the program automatically jumps to the Save As category. And it goes to This PC. So let's say I'm gonna go to My Documents folder and I wanna use my Projects folder. So now I'm in the Save As dialog box. I can select the project folder that I want and then go down to the File Name box and type in the name for the project. After you fill in the name ,go ahead and click Save. Now while you're working on your project you wanna save your work so you don't lose it. There are two ways to do that. You can go to the File tab and click Save. And that will save your file. Or for a really fast approach press Control S on your keyboard and that's how you create and save a brand new project.
