- Sprint planning is the event where the team selects the product backlog items or PBIs to get done in the coming sprint. This occurs on the first day of every sprint. A healthy planning event is the essential foundation for a healthy productive sprint. Sometimes though, sprint planning isn't healthy. A sprint planning anti-pattern I've seen is silence. This is one of the most damaging things that can go wrong with sprint planning. There are a couple of possible root causes to this issue. One root cause is that a dominant personality on the team may be the only one speaking. In fact, it's even possible this person is assigning work to individual team members. When this happens, team members disengage and collaboration on the sprint commitment ceases. It also stops the team from self-organizing around the work. If you observe this, you'll need to take immediate action. Meet with the dominant person and help them understand that collaboration is the goal of sprint planning. You'll need…
