Where does benefits management fit in?

- It can be difficult to know when to start thinking about benefits and then when to review them so let's take a look at where benefits management activities should be happening during the lifecycle of a project. Using a fairly generic project lifecycle, most projects go through some kind of feasibility stage. This is the point where a justification is provided for the project to start. This is usually done by the creation of an outline or initial business case, which among other things include some high-level expected benefits, whose forecast may have been used to justify the cost of the investment. Once the justification for the project is approved, the next stage is a more detailed definition stage. This stage takes the high-level benefits identified in the feasibility stage and breaks them down further into lower-level benefits which will be documented in a full business case.
