- The term servant leader is the one most commonly associated with the role of the scrum master. It's important to understand what this means as you embark on your scrum journey. Let's start by breaking the term into its component parts. First, let's talk about leadership from the scrum perspective. The scrum master is the scrum process owner and leader. As the process owner, they're expected to understand, embrace, and act in ways that demonstrate scrum theory, practice, and values. This knowledge is translated into the actions that build the process. The scrum master instructs the development team, the product owner or PO, and the organization as a whole on scrum practices and values.
