- I'm sure you heard of a pilot for a television show. It's the single episode used to pitch an entire TV series to networks. They are meant to be predictors of success, and they are a gauge for TV networks to determine how risky it is to develop an entire series. I recently looked at a list of the most popular TV pilots. It included game changers like The Sopranos, Lost, Mad Men, and 30 Rock, a glowing testament to the value of pilots. Similarly, within the world of PMOs, pilots let you test things on a small scale when launching a product or introducing a process, and they ultimately provide you with the opportunity to discover and fix any issues before major roll-outs without putting the entire organization at risk.
