- So, what skills do you need to have as a PMO leader? Well, looking at the job descriptions for a PMO director or VP of project management offer some clues. In fact, these job postings inundate you with clues. So to help you assess the skill set of a PMO leader in a digestible way, I'll break them down into four distinct categories: Project management, organizational, functional and people. The first skill set, project management, is the obvious one, and involves all facets of the project management discipline. These are technical skills ranging from mastery in project scheduling to navigating risks, to drafting the budget, to delivering crisp status reports, to managing deliverables. These skills allow a PMO leader to enable and deliver project management success.
