Building a community of practice

- As your organization transitions to scrum, there will be more and more teams that are cross-functional. One of the advantages of the old team model was that each person got to know and learn from others in their discipline. But as teams convert to a cross-functional model, the organization risks losing some of that crosspollination. Communities of practice, CoP for short, are the agile response to that situation. A CoP is simply a group of like-skilled people. They meet to bond with and learn from each other. They share insights and learnings from their respective teams. For example, one organization I worked with had many CoPs. There were CoPs for scrum masters, product owners, architects, and testers. This is a role-focused structure, but you can also create CoPs around specific technologies like .NET or Java.
