- If there's one thing about PMOs that turns off its stakeholders, it's process. Overtime, negative connotations like red tape, paper pushing, rigid, and unnecessary have become associated with it. In the name of implementing best practices, I have seen PMO practitioners try to use processes that worked elsewhere within their own organizations, only to find out the very hard way that they've been trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. This is really unfortunate because the value of process is enormous. If your processes aren't followed, they'll just be flowcharts on paper and your PMO a business unit with no value. On the flip side, if your processes are adopted, your stakeholders will start seeing their benefits and they will come to you for more. Process provides a consistent way of doing things through a sequence of steps and flow of information between relevant people and tools.
