- [Narrator] FM synthesis has its origins in the work of Doctor John Chowning at Stanford University in the late 1960s. The first FM synthesizer was a giant mainframe computer. Doctor Chowning's theory was that an entire range of acoustic instrument emulations would be possible my modulating a waveform with others that were tuned to the harmonic series. It was also discovered that deviations form the harmonic series resulted in bell-like tones and other complex sounds. In fact, many of the tambours that came easily to FM synthesis has proven difficult for the reigning generation of analog synthesizers to reproduce. This new approach to synthesis was licensed to Yamaha by Stanford in 1973 and patented by Stanford in 1975. Yamaha made its own patentable modification to the work of Doctor Chowning and released its first FM synthesizer in 1980. This was the GS1. At a cost of roughly $16,000 and weighing almost 200 pounds, it was intended mainly for use in recording studios. In fact, only…
