When DI electric guitar tracks work

- [Narrator] Many times, I get sent tracks to mix from home recordists that utilize directly recorded electric guitars in lieu of miking up an amp. Sometimes they use amp modeling plugins to add some tone to these tracks, but, other times, they attempt to use the direct guitar sound, as is, for their final mix. I've found that there are several types of directly recorded guitar sounds that work, and others that don't, so I recorded examples of these to listen to, and discuss. The first is a straight DI of an arpeggiated and strummed rhythm part, and I don't think it sounds very good. (insipid music) The sound seems kind of flat and buzzy to my ears, and has none of the tone of a speaker cab or a tube amp, yuck. The second is some light picking, with the guitar set to the bridge pickup, and played through a fancy outboard tube compressor.
