Using transient shaping plugins to alter acoustic guitar in a mix
- Miking and recording acoustic guitars is sometimes more difficult than you'd think. It's easy for the percussion-y aspects, the pick hitting the strings, the kind of clicking sounds to dominate a little bit, especially when it's sitting in a full band or rock mix. By shaping the attack and sustain of an acoustic guitar with transient shaping plugins, we can alter how the acoustic guitar works and sits in the mix. So I'm going to play you the track that I've recorded here. I used kind of a cheaper, small diaphragm condenser mic to record the acoustic guitar. And you'll hear how it sounds, it's not too bad by itself. (acoustic guitar) But notice the pick sound's kind of jumping out. When you hear it in the mix with the drums, and bass, and electric guitars. (rock music) It's working but, you know, could it be better? Which I guess, that's always the question. So I really like this new plugin, it's a version of the SPL Transient Designer put out by Universal Audio. Here's the mono…
