Join Larry Crane for an in-depth discussion in this video Using delay to hide shaky pitch, part of Music Production Secrets.
- When singers are holding a long note…in a certain part of a song, it's common…for pitch to waver a little bit.…It's not the easiest part of singing…to hold something long with a lot of power.…We've got an example here.…(woman singing)…You hear a little bit of waver…on some of the longer parts of the note there.…What I'm going to show you is a way to kind of mask that…in a really cool and creative fashion.…We're going to duplicate the raw vocal track,…make a copy of it.…
Now what I'm going to do, mute the original vocal…and we're going to listen for the parts…where we want to add some echo.…What we're going to do with the echo…is kind of like doubling, to create something…that kind of layers over itself.…We take the notes where it's good,…and those kind of cascade over the part…that needs a little pitch correction.…Here we go, we're going to listen to it again.…(woman singing)…So the top of that is great.…I'm going to take that breath off.…You can hear this, (sound of breath)…and we don't want that.…One thing we're looking for is to get away from anything…
