Understanding the AAX 64-bit plugin format

As mentioned in a previous chapter Pro Tools now takes advantage of the AAX plug-in format. In fact, in Pro Tools 11 all other plug-in formats including RTAS and TDM are now gone, and AAX is the only format Pro Tools supports going forward. So, let's talk about this a little bit. In Pro Tools 10, Avid introduced the new AAX plug-in format. Pro Tools 10 also supported RTAS and TDM plug-ins, if you had a HD system, for Legacy sessions. So it was a sorta bridge version of Pro Tools. The new format, which is replacing RTAS and TDM, AAX is supported as well as the older formats, so that you can sort of transition to this new format going forward. Now Pro Tools 11 only supports the AAX plug-in format, and to be more specific, Pro Tools 11 only supports 64-bit AAX plug-ins. What had happened is that Pro Tools 10, being a 32-bit application, used 32-bit plug-ins even in the AAX format.
