Speaker mic on kick drums

- [Instructor] Here's one of the most effective and inexpensive miking techniques I've come across and one I utilize on almost every tracking session. Years ago I ordered an eight dollar speaker from an electronics supply house. It's some sort of full range four inch driver. I had a broken mic shock mount and I pulled the pieces off until I had just the hoop left that was close to the size of the speaker and I cable tied that onto the speaker's magnet. Then I soldered a cable to it with a quarter inch jack on the end and the tip wire hooked up to the positive input tab of the speaker. Plugging this quarter inch jack into a DI box and then into a mic preamp allows the speaker to work like a microphone picking up variances in air pressure just like a dynamic mic. But being that it's a speaker is very inefficient at being a mic and therefore it generates a muddy, dark sound. One that's perfect for capturing the low…
