Percussion in stereo

- [Larry] I was producing an album, and the percussionist came up with the idea of adding triangle to the bossa nova rhythm of the song we were working on. Luckily there's a music store down the street from my studio. So we took a walk and picked up a triangle for my studio to keep on hand. When we tracked the triangle part, I simply grabbed the pair of mics we had used previously as stereo overheads for the drums, and I lowered them down and told 'em to play the part in front of the XY pair of mics. When I went to mix, I really liked the stereo sound of the triangle, so I kept it in hand hard left and right. Here's the track as recorded. (rhythmic triangle music) Notice the stereo spread in the very slight left and right sway of the musician's movement. Later I sent the mix to the artist to check out. And he replied that he liked the effect on the triangle, and the movement that it gave. I had to reply and tell him…
