- Pro Tools offers several different record modes,…normal or nondestructive,…loop, destructive, quick punch, track punch,…and destructive punch.…The current record mode is indicated…by the record button icon in the transport controls.…You can see that up here in our edit window…or we can open our transport,…and we can see this here.…To change the record mode…just right-click on the record enable button…or you can choose the record mode from the Options menu.…You can see that a few of these even have key commands,…so they can be enabled and disabled quickly…while you're working.…
You'll usually record in normal mode,…which is nondestructive.…Destructive, and destructive punch mode…will record over existing audio…erasing whatever it records over.…This can be useful in certain situations…like when you are updating a mix stem for example.…But for general recording…it can actually cause you to lose takes…that you may otherwise want to keep.…So recording a normal nondestructive mode…is better these circumstances…because it does not erase the existing material…
