Greg Wurth describes the basic makeup of an optical compressor as well as its common applications. He explains that gain reduction in this type of circuit is achieved by relation between a light bulb and photocell. He further explains that as audio passes through the light bulb, the photocell detects that signal which will then trigger gain reduction. He also shares the history and features of several classic optical compressors that are found in professional recording studios.
