Microphone overview

- [Instructor] In this chapter I'll explain what a microphone is as well as the basics of how they operate. I'll also go over the three types that are used in professional recording studios and explain their differences. These three types are Dynamics, Condensers, and Ribbons. Dynamic mics are very durable which allow them to be used on a large variety of applications. Condenser mics are much more delicate and very sensitive so their applications are chosen a bit more carefully. Ribbon mics tend to be very heavy as they utilize large magnets, but the ribbon element is very delicate and can be easily broken if placed near loud sources. A microphone is a device that converts acoustic energy into electric energy. They utilize a moving surface or diaphragm to detect audio waves that pass through the microphone.
