Mic preamp overview

- [Instructor] In this chapter, I'll explain what a microphone preamplifier is as well as the basics of its operation. I'll also go over the basic designs that are used in professional recording studios and explain their differences. The two types that I'll discuss are vacuum tube and solid state transistor designs. Tube designs are usually bulky, as the components are much larger and heavier. Solid state designs tend to be smaller and lighter, making them ideal for compact situations. Of course there's many variations that fall under these two types, and I'll share some different examples. A microphone preamp is a device that is designed to amplify the low-level signals that come from a microphone. A microphone is not able to produce a signal loud enough to be heard on its own. Therefore a preamplifier is required to boost the signal to line level so that it can be used in a professional environment.
