- [Instructor] One way to keep the nice room sound of a distant guitar mic from getting in the way is to key it from the vocal. That way, the sound isn't so big that it detracts from the main feature of the mix, and it still keeps that wonderful recorded ambiance. Let's listen to this track with guitar, bass, drums, keys, and vocal. (jazzy guitar music) If you listen to just the guitar, (guitar music) what we find is there's a room mic. Here's the room. (guitar music) And here's the close mic. (guitar music) Now, I'm exaggerating it. Usually we wouldn't put as much of the guitar room into the mix. Well, we might if it sounds good and if it works. In this case, it doesn't. It's just a little more than we'd use normally, but just so you can hear how this effect works, I'm going to keep it loud in the mix. Really, what we want to do is we want to control this room mic so it only pops up when the vocal isn't there. And the way we'll do that is by adding a compressor and then keying it…
