Frequency splitting tracks to manage bass guitar
- Electric bass guitar sometimes feels like the most ignored instrument when it comes to discussing recording and mixing. I know because I started as a bass player and how I'd always be sort of frustrated after I'd go through the recording process and feel like I wasn't represented the right way. In many cases, a tracking engineer will record only, like say, a single mic on an amp or maybe a DI base guitar track. So you have one track of audio to work from. When I need to get more control over the sound of the bass guitar, I'll do frequency splitting in order to apply different effects or levels or such to the different components of the bass guitar in the mix. So here I'm going to play you a second of what we're dealing with here on this track. Of course that's me on bass. (instrumental music) And we got a second section of the song that gets busier.
