Equalizing the snare

The snare is important because you hear it more than just about any drum in a song, and is responsible for the song's pulse. Although different snare drums sound differ from one another, here is a general way to approach EQing a snare that will usually get you to the ballpark. The first thing is you can't overcome a bad drum sound with EQ. If the snare drum doesn't sound good acoustically in the room, no amount of EQ is going to make it sound great. Let's listen to our snare drum soloed, hear what it sounds like, and then add a little bit of EQ to help it up. (music playing) Sounds pretty good to begin with, but I think we can make the sound even better. So let's go to our EQ plug-in. We will just go to the 4-Band EQ. The first thing to remember is we can make the drums sound crisper with a little bit of 5K, and this will give it just a little bit of more definition than we had before.
