Drum high end in the mix

Drum high end in the mix

- [Instructor] I got to thinking about recording and mixing the other day, as I usually do, and the concept of how much high end one wants on a drum set, and how it effects the entire mix popped into my head. Some records that I really love have darker drum tones. And others that I also like are very bright and airy. What happens when we change the amount of brightness on the drum overheads while listening to a mix? I roughed out a mix of a song here, and then I came up with three EQ settings for high end shelves plus no EQ in order to hear what would happen on the whole mix as we change the top end of the drum overhead tracks. The first setting has a five db boost at five kilohertz. The second setting has a three db boost at 1.5 kilohertz. And the third has a three db reduction at 1.5 kilohertz as well. So, how do these sound when the whole mix is running? (music plays) Number one seems to open up the cymbals and the hi-hat more and provide a little more room tone. (music plays)…
