Predelay can help near up the mix yet keep the tracks feeling lush. Before digital effects and computer plugins existed, plate reverbs were a way to add spatial effects. A common technique uses a tape delay before the plate, to predelay the onset of the reverb, to simulate the effect of reverb in the real world.
