Join Frank D. Cook for an in-depth discussion in this video Challenge: Arranging media, part of Pro Tools 12 Essential Training: 101.
(energetic whooshing) - [Instructor] In this challenge, you'll work with the existing audio and MIDI in the DHY Remix session to finish out the arrangement. To complete this challenge, you'll first open the DHY Remix 06 session that you previously created. If not available, you can use the session I've provided for you in the 03 Finished Solutions folder. Next, complete a save as to create a copy called DHY Remix 07.
Then you can hide the side columns in the Edit window if you'd like to maximize your work area. Next, select the clip on the Vox 2 track and zoom in on it using the Zoom Toggle function. Then select from the start of the clip at bar nine, beat four up to bar 12, beat one. Copy that selection, and paste it at bar 13, beat four. Next, set the Grid value to 1/8 notes in order to make more precise selections. Having done that, select the words I can't at the start of the clip you pasted in.
Now, you can listen through the track to identify each phrase during this challenge, but I'm also providing you the exact time locations for each selection here. This phrase occurs from bar 13, beat four, tick number 480 to bar 14, beat one, tick number 480. Keep an eye on the Bars/Beats ruler and the Start, End, and Length fields in the counter area as you make your selections. Next, duplicate the selected phrase.
At this point, you will need to set the Grid to 16th notes to be able to make more granular selections. And with that done, you can select and remove the word will in the phrase how many lies will you tell me. That word occurs from bar 15, beat two, tick 720 to bar 15, beat three, tick 000. Next, select the remainder of the clip containing the words you tell me, and move it to start at Bar 16.
Then activate Slip mode, and trim the end of the clip to remove the audio after the word me. Now, at this point, you can listen to the arrangement thus far and complete additional editing to your liking using grid-based editing or other techniques you've learned. This is your chance to get creative and explore the possibilities. When you're finished editing on the Vox 2 track, deactivate Zoom Toggle. Then place your edit cursor on the Horns Part I track by clicking anywhere on the track with the selector tool.
Next, recall the first memory location in the session called First Horns Start. Then separate the MIDI clip on the Horns Part I track at that location. Finally, select and copy the separated portion of the MIDI, and paste it in at Bar 14. Once again, be sure to save your work when finished. This challenge should take about 10 minutes to complete, but feel free to use more time to explore. When you're done, make sure to check out my solution video, where I'll show you how I went about arranging the media.
Enjoy, have fun, and get creative.
