- [Narrator] Another point of confusion…for a lot of people making notes,…is the difference between compression and limiting.…Simply put, the limiter's ratio settings are much…higher than a compressor.…So where as a compressor works nicely…at one and a half, two, three, four to one compression,…that means for every four dB over the limit,…one dB comes out.…For every 10 over the limit, one dB comes out…at a higher compression ratio.…So once you get over four or six,…you get into limiting territory.…
It's a much sharper, brick wall kind of effect,…which is another term that could be used…when describing limiting.…Brick wall limiting sounds the way…the word makes you think it would sound,…it goes up and up and up until it hits that brick wall…and then it stops.…A great example of a brick wall limiter…I've placed here on the output of the stereo bus…is by fabfilter and it's called Pro-Limiter,…or Pro-L Limiter.…And it really shows you quite succinctly…how a limiter works.…Below the threshold of limiting,…nothing happens to the signal…
