Brian shares another actual mix note and shows you how to avoid a particularly annoying side effect of overdoing a dynamics processor. Massey De:Esser is featured.
- [Instructor] I'll read you a note that I received.…And it says, "I'm hearing a bit of de-effing and de-ething."…So they're replacing de-essing with two f's or th,…effing and ething.…That happens, that lispy sound happens when you're…overusing using a de-esser.…I have one set up here in the extreme to demonstrate…that here with Stefan Pruett's Carefree.…Listen.…♫ It's just a place when it's not with you.…- [Instructor] There it is without the de-esser.…
♫ Carefree.…- [Instructor] Just rolled it out.…♫ It's just a place when it's not with you.…- [Instructor] That's a very clear example of…place when it's not.…That's what happens when you de-ess to hard.…♫ It's just a place when it's not with you.…- [Instructor] In the track.…♫ It's just a place when it's not with you.…- [Instructor] Again without it, just to drive this home.…♫ It's just a place when it's not with you.…- [Instructor] So de-essing is a kind of compression…that is also frequency dependent.…
It really is just going after the high frequency…point at about 6K, where sibilance interferes…
