Join Trish Witkowski for an in-depth discussion in this video Roll folds, part of Print Production: Folding.
- The distinguishing characteristic of the Roll Fold family…is four or more panels that roll in on each other.…One turns inward and rolls into the others…until the entire piece is folded to a compact format.…The roll-in panels must get incrementally smaller…to be able to tuck into the respective panels.…This is because paper is dimensional,…has a thickness and so we have to account for that.…The process is called folding compensation.…And I talk more about that in Chapter 2 of this course.…So because the panels have to get narrower…as they go, file setup for the roll folds…can be very tricky.…
Even so, roll folds are cool.…Here are a few.…On the far left is a classic Roll Fold.…Next to that is a Reverse Fold, so it's just basically…changes direction and rolls in from the other side.…An Asymmetrical Roll has panels that are different widths.…And then there's a Vertical Roll.…Roll folds are nice for brochures and marketing materials.…However, they are not great for large bodies of copy…since reading order can be confused…
