Map folds

- Map folds exist because of the existence of large maps and the need to get them down to a manageable size. On the opposite end of the spectrum, map folds are often used in miniature for pharmaceutical folding. You know, all of the comprehensive information that is tucked into a box of medication? Map folds characteristically have several accordion folds and are built in a tall format that opens into a large continuous layout rather than spreads. Here are some map folds. As a two-story map, a three-story map, and a four story map. For those of you who are wondering why map folds aren't in the accordion family, you know who you are, you clever people. Well technically maps are a subset of the accordion family, but the printing industry sees them as a category in and of themselves.
