Gate folds
- Gate folds are generally symmetrical and the distinctive characteristic of a gate is two or more panels folding into the center from opposing sides. Gates folds offer a nice reveal and work well for direct mail and marketing brochures. There are a few different kinds of gate folds. Here they are. One the left, is a standard gate fold. Next to that is what's called a closed gate. A lot of people call this a double gate, but actually a real double gate is to the right. Gate folding twice. The last one is what's called an open gate and it's one of my favorites. Gate folds often require the addition of a knife folder, a gate folder attachment, or plow folder to execute. Otherwise, they'll need to be hand-folded to finish. If you're interested in learning more about the mechanical folding processes for gate folds and other folded formats, check out Chapter 3 of this course.
