- We get so used to looking at the same few folded formats every day, in the mail, and for marketing material. Sometimes we forget that we can change these formats in even the simplest of ways to make them feel and look entirely different. If you don't believe me, try this rotation technique and see what it does to your layout and your mind. Instead of making a standard 4x9 inch tri-fold brochure, try flipping the width and heigh measurements by making it a 9x4 inch tri-fold instead. See the difference? Same size and folding style but a very different layout and opening experience. Now if you're designing a self-mailing piece or a folded piece that can go through the mail without the protection of an envelope, you'll need to look very carefully at what the rotation change did to fold placement.
