- Next, let's talk about the difference between broadside folds and short folds. A broadside fold doubles its area by folding in half on itself before any characteristic folding style is created. For example, a standard tri-fold is six pages. Very simple, a broadside tri-fold is 12 pages, because it folds in half first before taking on the tri-fold format. Folds in half, and then folds down. The broadside fold is often mistakenly called a "french fold", but a french fold is actually the name for a printing technique used on the broadside folding style. True french folds are in the broadside format, but they're printed on the outside, side one, and blank on the inside, side two. French folds are commonly used for invitations. A short fold is a variation of the broadside style of folding; think of them as cousins. The difference is that the fold-over panels are shorter than the length of the piece.
