Learn about the various date and time functions available in Presto.
- [Instructor] Dates always are treated special in SQL…and in data platforms, and Presto is no different.…I wanted to run through some of the basic…date functionality here for you…in case you're unfamiliar with the anti-SQL stuff.…We'll start by logging in to Presto.…Once you're logged in to Presto,…you don't really need a catalog or system to be working with…because we're just operating solely here…in the Presto environment itself.…So we'll start by looking at the current date.…select current_date,…and it'll give you today's date.…
You can also do this for time.…select current_time.…The exact UTC time.…You can also use now, which is one that I prefer.…select now.…This one you need open and closed parentheses.…And finish it off with a semicolon,…and you get both of those combined, date and time.…If you're working with data that comes from Web applications…you'll likely get it in the Unix timestamp format,…and this can be a little bit cumbersome to work with in…some platforms, but in Presto it's pretty straightforward.…
Data science expert Ben Sullins helps you get up to speed with Presto, and leverage it to accomplish a wide-range of data science and analytics tasks. He uses different interfaces with Presto—such as R and Tableau—and digs into the expressive SQL language that Presto offers for your analysis. At the end of this course, you'll know the key concepts of Presto and how to use them to take full advantage of your modern big data system.
