- When we discuss codecs, It is good to know that there are two types of compression methods. They are iframe and GAAP. iframe compression takes place on each individual frame of the video, compressing the pixel information only on that frame. Each and every frame of video can be viewed and reconstructed by itself. It needs nothing but the image and the codec. This would be the compression method used by all still images. To describe better how this compression works and how it gets rid of information, which means it's lossy, Imagine that you have a still have a beautiful beach, blue sky and sand. Well, the pixels that represent the color blue will be many and the color blue will be nearly identical in most places. So the codec will treat most of the blue pixels as identical.
