What are open captions?
- Where closed captions have a lot of limit, open captions free that up. Let's take a look at some of the differences with open captions. Open captions' major difference is they are burned in. There is nothing additional, no sidecars. They are physically part of the screen, and there's no way to remove them. An area that we always talk about with open captions, it's an area of confusion, is the difference between open captions and subtitles. Now, for those of you watching inside of North America, we tend to break these up like this. Subtitles are technically for viewers that can hear. If I'm watching a foreign film, I will often see and call those things subtitles. Captions, on the other hand, closed or open, are more assumed to be for the hard of hearing or deaf. Now, in the rest of the world, they don't make this differentiation. It's either text on screen or not, and these open captions are permanently on screen.
