What does "508 compliant" mean?

- When talking about accessible content, you'll often hear the phrase 508 compliant. But what does that exactly mean? Section 508 refers to a specific set of guidelines put in place by the U.S. Government. However these policies are often similar to those used worldwide. In 1998, the U.S. Congress amended the Rehabilitation Act to require Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities. Inaccessible technology really interferes with an individual's ability to obtain and use information quickly and easily. This is a truly important concept. Many folks feel that if content can be read, or simply downloaded or mail ordered that it's good enough, can't we just send the video to the person that requests it? Or can't they just download the transcript and read it?
