VBR vs. CBR

- Since we already discussed that what bitrate you use is dependent on the content of the video and how the viewer will see it, we must ask ourselves, what if my video has different scenes that require different bitrates to look better and still maintain a small file size? The answer to that question is to use variable bitrates. In other words, when you need to encode the different looking scenes of your video with different bitrates, this is known as variable bitrate. Depending on the content of your video, you will want to choose a bitrate that doesn't change throughout the video or a bitrate that does. A bit rate that remains the same throughout the video is known as constant bitrate or CBR. A bitrate that changes in the video is known as variable bitrate or the VBR.
