You've crafted the structure of your story. Now you need to figure out how you're going to support it, to prove it, visually and orally, with video, still images, graphics, and sound. Optimally, your video will support or prove your story better than your script can. Some topics lend themselves to video. Sporting events, concerts, parades, just about anywhere you point your camera you'll find something that supports your story. Other times you face slim pickings: speeches, meetings, news conferences, vast wastelands of photo opportunities. In any event, with an outline of your story in hand, consider what you'll need to fill the time allotted for each subtopic within your story. A rule of thumb I use when shooting is that an edited shot usually lasts for about three seconds. That of course can vary considerably, but with that number in mind, a minute-thirty story will need something like thirty shots. Those shots need to reinforce your message.
