Stylizing color with gradient maps
- One of the more unusual options inside of Photoshop is the gradient map. This effectively takes a set of colors, and maps it to the image based upon tonal value. Now, on its own, this can get kind of obnoxious, and looks a bit over the top, but, when you introduce things like blending modes, or take advantage of lower opacities, it can become a very subtle and beautiful effect. The gradient map adjustment is a very powerful command. You'll find it here available in the adjustments panel. By default, it may have a strange preset applied. Some of them are quite obnoxious, in fact. But, if you click the gear icon, here, you'll find several presets available. For example, color harmonies gives you some nice tones, and you'll find simple recipes here that can be applied. You may also find that the second color harmonies offer some additional options that you like.
