Setting up a Production
- Let's create our own production from scratch so that we can see exactly how this is done, but before we do that, we'll need to change a couple of things in our system. Go to the Preferences panel and Windows, that's under Edit, Preferences, and on the Mac it's under Premiere Pro, Preferences. In here, go to Media. In here, uncheck the following, write XMP ID to files on import, write clip markers to XMP, and enable clip and XMP metadata linking. Now, let's go to Collaboration. In here, Enable Project Locking and make sure to write your name under the username. Click Okay, now let's go to Window, Workspaces, and de-select Import Workspace from Projects. This avoids having your workspace change when opening projects used by other editors. So what is XMP? XMP is the extension for Adobe's Extensible Metadata Platform, which lets you embed metadata into the files themselves. Premiere Pro can use XMP to keep track of files that may have had the same name or similar attributes. While single editors will not be affected by these settings, collaboration teams can be affected. Now let's go ahead and create a new production. Go to File, New, Production. Give it a name. I'm going to name mine, New Production. Click on the blue text to determine where you would like for this production folder to live. I will send mine to a network drive. The Production panel is open and your first project is created for you. Let's go ahead and rename this project. I will name mine First Project. Now let's go to the Production Settings. You can find those on their File, Production Settings. Once the Production Settings are open, you will notice that these are very similar to the project settings that we have seen in the past. These will apply to all of the users of this particular production. If you notice the Scratch Disks, you can change them, but by default, they will go into the same directory as the production. Let's go ahead and click Okay. One last thing. Let's go into File Explorer or Finder and let's see what Adobe created in there. I will navigate to the folder, New Production, and notice that I have my First Project, my First Projectlock, and a file that has an extension of prodset. These are the settings. Please don't move or modify this file.
