Sometime during your initial or subsequent meetings with your client you should scout the location or locations where you'll do the shoot. In my TV news days we didn't have that luxury. We showed up with our regular set of gear and just kind of winged it. But that run-and-gun approach meant we frequently missed opportunities to get some great shots. We simply had to roll with the situation we found ourselves in, and then move on to the next story. But in the video production world, you usually have the opportunity to do some preproduction planning, including scouting locations. That extra work leads to a better finished product. When scouting a location, you need to consider several factors, including room size, shooting angles, lighting, and how any events you're going to cover will play out.
