- We've learned a lot of ways to get material into the timeline and how to tweak it once its there. But there are still more useful techniques for both editing and for organization, some of which we'll take a look at in the hodgepodge, chapter six, of many different useful post production techniques. And specifically in this movie, we're gonna explore the replace edit. So I just have a scratch sequence here where I'm experimenting with a few shots to include in another part of my greyhound project. First, here I have a shot of the dogs leaving the house, and the camera is behind the dogs from within the house.
And here I've got a clip in my 6.1 bin of the dogs coming out of the house, but the camera is outside the house. Okay, so I want to edit these together so it flows, and I want to keep the audio from this shot so that it's fluid. All right, so I'm just gonna come down to this sequence and use the razor tool to cut this shot where I want to switch to the reverse shot. Okay, and let's find that moment.
All right, so as soon as that second dog is leaving the house, about right there, I'm gonna make my cut. My razor tool is right over here, keyboard shortcut C. If I just press C, I'll show you what happens. It cuts through both video and audio, as you can see here. So I'm going to need to undo that. And to cut just my video, I need to hold down option or alt on a PC. So let's come back to that moment right there. And with my razor tool enabled I'll option click, and then we've just cut our video there.
And I want to switch back to my selection tool V. And let's come up here to the source monitor. All right, so let's find that exact same moment here in this clip. All right, so there's the second dog leaving the house. And here I'm going to mark an in point. Okay, so we have an in point here in the source. We don't have any in or out points down here in the timeline, but that's okay. We're actually going to drag and drop. This is gonna be video only, so I'm gonna disable my audio. And now I'm just going to drag this down, and it's way too long.
But if I hold down option or alt on a PC, watch it shrink up. All right, so I'll press option, and you'll see that the boundaries shrink up and restrict to the boundaries that I currently have. Okay, so here's without option. I'm holding down option, I'm gonna release. And let's go ahead and play and make sure that the timing is good. - Come on, guys. Let's go outside. Let's go outside. Come on, monkeys. - All right, great, so that was really easy. I quickly swapped those shots. I found the moment that I wanted to sync up, and then by option or alt dragging into that space, I was able to constrict my boundaries.
Now I'm gonna come down to this one here. Barbara is throwing the ball for Allie, the dog. - Go. Go get that one. - All right, and I have the same action right here in a medium shot. - Do you want to do more? Okay, come on. Get this. - Okay, so this time I'm gonna line up my playheads, so no in or out points at all. But I will need to cut this shot, so let's find the moment where we want to cut to my medium shot.
Okay, how about right there as the ball is almost at the ground. So I'm gonna press C to enable my razor tool, and then I'm gonna hold down option and click, and then go back to my selection tool V. And now let me zoom in just a little bit. I'm gonna find a moment to sync up to my medium shot. So let's back up. Okay, how about this right here where her arm is straight down holding the ball. Let's find that moment here in the medium shot.
Okay, so I think that's pretty close. I've got my playhead here where her arm is down. I've got my playhead here where her arm is down. I've cut my shot, so I'm all set up. I just select the shot, and I actually don't want the audio, so I'm going to option click, or alt click on a PC, so it's just my video. Then I'm gonna right click, and I'm gonna come to replace with clip, and then from source monitor, match frame. All right, we've already talked about match frame in this course, and this is a special type of match frame where it's going to match this playhead location to this playhead location and make the edit.
All right, and you can see that the medium shot was edited in. I'm going to play it and make sure that the timing is good. - Go. Go get that one. - Aha, there is actually a problem here, and it has to do with the audio. I'm gonna play it again. Listen to it, and then watch the medium shot. - Go. Go get that one. - All right, so in the long shot, Barbara is saying, "Go." And in the medium shot, she's not. Okay, so there's a disconnect there. I can solve this a couple of ways. One way is to just trim this edit earlier, and I can do that pretty easily with the rolling edit tool, keyboard shortcut N.
And so I'll just select this and move it earlier. And here's the word go, so I want to make sure to get before that. I think I've got it, so I'll play and make sure I've got it. - Go. Go get that one. - Okay, so we've solved the problem that way. But if we didn't want to make this shot shorter, we can actually solve this with a match frame. So let's bring that back over. And this time I'm gonna edit the audio from the medium shot into the sequence. So I'm gonna go back to my selection tool V and I'm gonna shift drag to get to the very beginning of this clip.
And I'm gonna perform a match frame, which is gonna load this frame right here in the source monitor. All right, so I'll press F to do a match frame. All right, now this is backed up, and this moment right here equals this moment. So let's steal the audio. I'm going to just move my out point all the way to the end because I think we're gonna need it all. And this is gonna be an audio edit, not a video edit. And we'll go ahead and override by pressing period. And let's see what happened here. So it's not as long as the clip, but let's see if it works and can combine with the audio with the audio that's already there.
I'm gonna bring my audio down just a little bit. As you can see, I have done it already. And I'll play, and we'll see how it works. All right, I think it works pretty nicely. So we've got different elements working here. We've got a medium shot here with its matching audio, and then we have a long shot here, and its matching audio is downstream, and I think it can work together.
Not bad. All right, so as you can see, replace edits are great ways for you to quickly swap out material either with in or out points or even by using the playhead location as the reference point for the swap.
