Join Jason Osder for an in-depth discussion in this video Panels and workspaces, part of Premiere Pro Guru: Customizing Workspaces.
The concept of workspaces is largely based on panels that already exist within the Premiere interface. It's a good idea to take a close look at panels in general, and how they work. Because they are the building blocks for workspaces. Here you see that I'm looking at the standard editing workspace. But what I really want to point out is that the editing workspace features the source panel, the program panel, sequence panel, and also the project panel. However, each panel also has additional tabs above it.
So, here we have the effects panel, audio mixer panel, metadata, and so on. Importantly, in the editing workspace, the project panel and the media browser are stacked together here, and you'll see that's not particularly convenient when you're doing things like importing. Now, all panels can be stacked together like this to create tabs. They can also be moved around, resized and recombined. For instance, if I were to take my project panel and bring it up to where the source is, you'll see that I have choices with this purple shading, of adding it as another tab, adding it above and connecting the windows or to the left and so on.
The entire interface, you can see with the green highlight, also provides places to dock these panels that would look like that. I can always resize and adjust and I can add this back as one of the tabs down here as well. In addition, every panel has a pull-down menu to the right top and that offers additional choices about what can be shown and also how these can be undocked, closed and maximized. Without knowing how to manipulate your panels, it's really difficult to make new and good workspaces.
Now that we know generally how panels work, we can move forward into manipulating and creating workspaces that are useful for us.
