Match cut

- A match cut is a creative edit that visually matches two continuous shots in terms of subject matter or action. It's a classic example of continuity editing because it maintains a logical flow between shots and presents a cohesive narrative for the viewer. A traditional example of a match cut is to go from a person, say in a medium shot, to another person in an identically composed medium shot. These two shots match visually in the frame which signals a relationship between the shots. In The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, we see these men having a stare down during a tense duel. In match cuts, the scene lasts about five minutes and the viewer simply observes these men's wordless stares. And then notice how the match cuts are used later in the scene with close-ups.
