Keying and matting, what's the difference?
- Keying is when we define the transparent area of the video with the chroma or luma values of a clip. In other words, when we determine that a particular color or a particular lightness value will be used to create transparency. You can key out a color to make it totally transparent in your video or you can also use the key color or luma information to select an area of your clip so you can alter it. Let's go ahead and open sequence 1.3 in the project panel. Notice that the first clip is that of a young man standing in front of a blue curtain. Single click on this clip and let's see what happens when we disable the effect in the effect controls panel. I find it easier to see what happens when I disable the effects applied to a clip. By toggling the effect on and off, I can clearly see what the effect is doing. Once the effect is disabled, the color green comes back and we see the clip as it was shot.
