Jump cut

- A jump cut is an edit where two sequential shots of the same subject are edited together without concern for continuity or flow. This results in the subject seeming to jump from one spot to another within the video frame. Jump cuts are often abrupt and jarring. They scream, "There's a cut here!", and therefore draw attention to the editing process. For this reason jump cuts are a tenant of complexity editing rather than continuity editing, because they celebrate discontinuity and use the edit to maximize emotional impact. Jump cuts are often used to fracture time within a shot in order to move the audience forward. In the 1960's French New Wave Cinema Movement directors like Jean-Luc Godard, began jump cutting extensively, in a stylist manner, like in this scene from the film "Breathless".
