Getting plenty of natural sound

Because we focus on the visual aspects of our stories, we sometimes neglect sound, but sound is critical. Stories without natural sounds fall flat. Viewers expect to hear natural sound, even something as simple as quiet traffic noise or wind. Stories without natural sound lack believability. So as you shoot your video, look and listen for all opportunities. Even if your camera is not pointed at the source of the sound, keep on recording. You can take that sound and combine it with video that you shot elsewhere. As I shot video for this course, I've recorded numerous instances of natural sound. Here are a few. The horseshoer, the farrier had numerous possibilities. (clinking metal) This zip line had this great sound. (zip line whizzing) An outdoor grill can lend itself to all kinds of audio possibilities. (meat sizzling) Everywhere I turned in this Mexican Restaurant, there were excellent natural-sound opportunities. (chopping and pounding sounds) I can use natural sound with this…
