Gain stages in recording: The gotchas

- As an audio post mixer, I see lots of things come in from the field and one of the biggest things is that people aren't really paying attention to the signal flow of their record chains where it's being recorded into the mike or the field recorder, and then into the camera, or the mixer, or the sound device unit, or wherever. There's lots of different places where you can mess up that chain. The area that I see is most overlooked is when the signal is actually going into the mixer prior to going into the camera or into the field recorder. And the reason why it gets overlooked is because you think everything is fine, you could be looking at your camera, and the level going into your camera is just fine. See here I'm talking into it and it looks just fine, but over here at the field recorder, it's distorted. And if you're not monitoring correctly, meaning, if you're not putting your headphones in between the mixer and the camera audio or after the camera audio, if you're not listening…
